Parents, the First Heralds of the Gospel

Los padres, los primeros mensajeros del Evangelio

Dear parishioners, Happy Easter! Happy Sunday of the Good Shepherd!

This week, I will share with you how our parish is supporting families with the growth and education of their children. Over the next few weeks, you will see our Religious Education children receiving Our Eucharistic Lord for the first time at Sunday Mass. This reminds their families that their children and young people are receiving the Eucharist on the Lord’s Day, as they are expected to continue to do for the rest of their lives, week after week — from one Sunday to the next one.

This is an intentional effort to support parents in their role as primary educators, and to encourage them to consider what they say and do. We are not the first parish in our country to launch this initiative; rather, we are joining many others who are thriving with a refreshed approach to the sacramental life.

From ‘The Pope of the Family’

Pope Saint John Paul II wrote an excellent document on the Christian family. The following quotes are intended for your meditation. These words inspired our recent decision. Here are the words of ‘the Pope of the Family’, as he wanted to be remembered:

The mission to educate demands that Christian parents should present to their children all the topics that are necessary for the gradual maturing of their personality from a Christian and ecclesial point of view. They will therefore… take care to show their children the depths of significance to which the faith and love of Jesus Christ can lead. Furthermore, their awareness that the Lord is entrusting to them the growth of a child of God, a brother or sister of Christ, a temple of the Holy Spirit, a member of the Church, will support Christian parents in their task of strengthening the gift of divine grace in their children’s souls.

The educational mission of the Christian family is a true ministry through which the Gospel is transmitted and radiated, so that family life itself becomes an itinerary of faith and in some way a Christian initiation and a school of following Christ. Within a family that is aware of this gift, as Paul VI wrote, “all the members evangelize and are evangelized.”

By virtue of their ministry of educating, parents are, through the witness of their lives, the first heralds of the Gospel for their children. Furthermore, by praying with their children, by reading the word of God with them and by introducing them deeply through Christian initiation into the Body of Christ — both the Eucharistic and the ecclesial Body — they become fully parents, in that they are begetters not only of bodily life but also of the life that through the Spirit’s renewal flows from the Cross and Resurrection of Christ.

Familiaris Consortio, 39

Parents are, through the witness of their lives, the first heralds of the Gospel for their children.

Please pray for everyone who will receive Holy Communion at Our Lady of Angels in the coming weeks.

May the Lord bless your family with a deep sense of Easter joy!
