Standing Together for Life and Truth This November

This November, two proposed amendments on Virginia’s ballot threaten the dignity of human life and the truth of marriage. Fr. Álvaro invites us to stand together as Catholics, to vote “No,” and to defend the God-given goods that bless every person and family.

Dear Parishioners,

To mark the 250th anniversary of our nation’s foundation, Pope Leo XIV wrote that “among the principles that have guided the development of this country is the God-given dignity of every human life, each person being endowed with an inherent worth that calls for reverence, protection and care. In this spirit, a full understanding of this dignity leads to recognizing the importance of safeguarding human life from its beginning at conception until natural death, and of building a society in which the vulnerable, the suffering and the forgotten are always met with compassion, solidarity and love.”

This fall in the Commonwealth of Virginia two proposed amendments on the ballot threaten the human right to life and the truth of marriage. These proposed amendments are called the “Virginia Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment” and the “Virginia Remove Constitutional Same-Sex Marriage Ban Amendment.” They also threaten constitutional justice, the equal protection of the laws, and religious liberty.

As Catholics, we vote “no” on these proposed amendments. We recognize that, if passed, these amendments would enshrine objective wrongs in Virginia’s Constitution and overturn basic matters of justice and gravely damage the intrinsic dignity of persons and the nature of marriage and the family. These are matters of fundamental truth concerning the human person.

Although Catholics may in good conscience disagree over most political policies which call for strictly prudential judgments, certain fundamental matters such as marriage and the protection of human life demand a consistent and universal response from Catholics to protect and preserve objective goods by which God blesses humanity.

If written into Virginia’s Constitution, these unjust amendments would be extraordinarily difficult to reverse. Virginia would effectively become a sanctuary for abortion and commercial abortion businesses. Basic health and safety standards that protect women from harm would be eliminated, parents would be pushed out of life-altering decisions involving their family and children, and unregulated abortions would be possible, performed even on healthy babies up to the moment of birth for any reason with no limits.

At the same time, Virginia’s Constitution would mislead future generations concerning the truth about marriage by adopting a false legal definition of marriage that would further erode a public sense of marriage as a natural institution uniting one man and one woman. Additionally, the amendment would lead to the expansion of an already existing commercial surrogacy industry which violates the natural rights of children and exploits vulnerable mothers.

Este noviembre, dos enmiendas propuestas en la boleta electoral de Virginia amenazan la dignidad de la vida humana y la verdad del matrimonio. El P. Álvaro nos invita a permanecer unidos como católicos, a votar “No” y a defender los bienes dados por Dios que bendicen a cada persona y familia.

Queridos feligreses:

Con motivo del 250.º aniversario de la fundación de nuestra nación, el papa León XIV escribió que “entre los principios que han guiado el desarrollo de este país se encuentra también la dignidad otorgada por Dios a toda vida humana, ya que cada persona está dotada de un valor intrínseco que exige respeto, protección y cuidado. En este espíritu, una comprensión plena de esta dignidad lleva a reconocer la importancia de salvaguardar la vida humana desde su inicio, en la concepción, hasta la muerte natural, y de construir una sociedad en la que a los vulnerables, a los que sufren y a los olvidados se les trate siempre con compasión, solidaridad y amor.”

Este otoño, en el estado de Virginia, se han propuesto dos enmiendas en la boleta electoral que amenazan el derecho humano a la vida y la verdad sobre el matrimonio. Estas enmiendas se denominan “Enmienda del derecho al aborto y la libertad reproductiva de Virginia” y “Enmienda para eliminar la prohibición constitucional del matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo en Virginia”. Asimismo, amenazan la justicia constitucional, la igualdad ante la ley y la libertad religiosa.

Como católicos, votamos “no” a estas enmiendas propuestas. Reconocemos que, si se aprueban, estas enmiendas consagrarían errores objetivos en la Constitución de Virginia y revertirían principios básicos de justicia, dañando gravemente la dignidad esencial de las personas y la naturaleza del matrimonio y la familia. Estos son asuntos de verdad fundamental sobre la persona humana.

Aunque los católicos pueden mantener opiniones distintas sobre la mayoría de las políticas públicas que requieren juicios estrictamente prudenciales, ciertos asuntos fundamentales, como el matrimonio y la protección de la vida humana, exigen una respuesta coherente y universal de los católicos para proteger y preservar los bienes objetivos con los que Dios bendice a la humanidad.

Si se incorporan a la Constitución de Virginia, estas enmiendas injustas serían extraordinariamente difíciles de revertir. Virginia se convertiría efectivamente en un santuario para el aborto y para los negocios comerciales de aborto. Se eliminarían las normas básicas de salud y seguridad que protegen a las mujeres de daños, los padres serían excluidos de decisiones que cambian la vida de sus familias e hijos, y serían posibles los abortos sin regulación, realizados incluso en bebés sanos hasta el momento del nacimiento por cualquier motivo y sin límites.

Al mismo tiempo, la Constitución de Virginia engañaría a las futuras generaciones sobre la verdad del matrimonio al adoptar una definición legal falsa que debilitaría aún más el sentido público del matrimonio como una institución natural que une a un hombre y a una mujer. Además, la enmienda conduciría a la expansión de una industria de alquiler de vientres ya existente, la cual viola los derechos naturales de los niños y se aprovecha de madres vulnerables.
