Dear parishioners,
Lent is a time of preparation for Easter Sunday. Particular emphasis is placed on preparing catechumens to receive the sacraments of Christian initiation at the Easter Vigil, which falls on Saturday 4 April this year. For this reason, now is a very appropriate time to review our faith as set out in the Baltimore Catechism.
What is a Sacrament? A Sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.
How many Sacraments are there? There are seven Sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Penance, Extreme Unction, Holy Orders, and Matrimony.
Whence have the Sacraments the power of giving grace? The Sacraments have the power of giving grace from the merits of Jesus Christ.
What grace do the Sacraments give? Some of the Sacraments give sanctifying grace, and others increase it in our souls.
Which are the Sacraments that give sanctifying grace? The Sacraments that give sanctifying grace are Baptism and Penance; and they are called Sacraments of the dead.
Why are Baptism and Penance called Sacraments of the dead? Baptism and Penance are called Sacraments of the dead, because they take away sin, which is the death of the soul, and give grace, which is its life.
Which are the Sacraments that increase sanctifying grace in our soul? The Sacraments that increase sanctifying grace in our soul are: Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Anointing of the Sick Holy Orders, and Matrimony; and they are called Sacraments of the living.
Last Sunday I had the privilege of joining most of our catechumens for the Rite of Election. “Dear catechumens”, said Bishop Burbidge, “we are so happy for you”. “What a special day in your life for the diocese and the entire church … Jesus has chosen you by name, saying ‘Come after me, follow me.’ And by giving your yes, Jesus will make you a new creation, the one who lives and reigns forever and ever.” You can read a special article about it in the Arlington Catholic Herald. Here is a quote from it: “After signing his name in the Book of the Elect, Bishop Burbidge walked down the line, welcoming each catechumen with a handshake. “You are not here by some sort of chance or coincidence,” he said. “You’re here as part of God’s divine and mysterious plan for you.”
It is amazing to see how the Lord touches the lives of so many different people. The cathedral welcomed over 300 people who had never been baptized before. Please pray for them and their families as they approach the most important day of their lives: 4 April 2026: the day of their baptism, confirmation and first communion.
I encourage you to pray for a continued conversion this lent by meditating on this beautiful prayer: “Grant, almighty God, through the yearly observance of holy Lent, that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in Christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects”. Amen.

La Cuaresma es un tiempo de preparación para el Domingo de Pascua. Se hace especial hincapié en la preparación de los catecúmenos para recibir los sacramentos de la iniciación cristiana en la Vigilia Pascual, que este año cae el sábado 4 de abril. Por esta razón, ahora es un momento muy apropiado para revisar nuestra fe tal y como se expone en el Catecismo de Baltimore.
- ¿Qué es un sacramento? Un sacramento es un signo externo instituido por Cristo para impartir la gracia.
- ¿Cuántos sacramentos hay? Hay siete sacramentos: Bautismo, Confirmación, Eucaristía, Penitencia, Extremaunción, Orden y Matrimonio.
- ¿De dónde tienen los sacramentos el poder de dar la gracia? Los sacramentos tienen el poder de dar la gracia por los méritos de Jesucristo.
- ¿Qué gracia dan los sacramentos? Algunos sacramentos dan la gracia santificante y otros la aumentan en nuestras almas.
- ¿Cuáles son los sacramentos que dan la gracia santificante? Los sacramentos que dan la gracia santificante son el Bautismo y la Penitencia, y se llaman sacramentos de los muertos.
- ¿Por qué se llaman sacramentos de los muertos el Bautismo y la Penitencia? El Bautismo y la Penitencia se llaman sacramentos de los muertos porque quitan el pecado, que es la muerte del alma, y dan la gracia, que es su vida.
- ¿Cuáles son los sacramentos que aumentan la gracia santificante en nuestra alma? Los sacramentos que aumentan la gracia santificante en nuestra alma son: la Confirmación, la Sagrada Eucaristía, la Unción de los Enfermos, las Órdenes Sagradas y el Matrimonio; y se llaman sacramentos de los vivos.
El domingo pasado tuve el privilegio de unirme a la mayoría de nuestros catecúmenos para el Rito de Elección. «Queridos catecúmenos», dijo el obispo Burbidge, «estamos muy felices por ustedes». «Qué día tan especial en sus vidas para la diócesis y para toda la Iglesia… Jesús los ha elegido por su nombre, diciéndoles: «Venid en pos de mí, seguidme». Y al dar vuestro sí, Jesús os convertirá en una nueva creación, la que vive y reina por los siglos de los siglos». «Después de firmar con su nombre en el Libro de los Elegidos, Monseñor Burbidge saludó personalmente a cada catecúmeno con un apretón de manos. «No están aquí por casualidad o coincidencia», dijo, «Están aquí como parte del plan divino y misterioso que Dios tiene para vosotros».
Es increíble ver cómo el Señor toca la vida de tantas personas diferentes. La catedral acogió a más de 300 personas que nunca antes habían sido bautizadas. Por favor, recen por ellos y sus familias, ya que se acercan al día más importante de sus vidas: el 4 de abril de 2026, día de su bautismo, confirmación y primera comunión.
Les animo a rezar por una conversión continua durante esta Cuaresma meditando sobre esta hermosa oración: «Concede, Dios todopoderoso, que mediante la observancia anual de la santa Cuaresma, crezcamos en la comprensión de las riquezas ocultas en Cristo y, con una conducta digna, persigamos sus efectos». Amén.
