Dear Parishioners,
The sanctuary rejuvenation good news continues. Our architects from Harrison Design are working on preliminary design schematics; and in accordance with our parish survey, the design is addressing concerns with the front confessionals, votive stations, flooring, and (yes) bathrooms. There is promise for beauty in this future rejuvenation, but it must be protected by a roof that doesn’t leak. The church roof was also a major concern in our parish survey.
The current roof design served us well from 1985 until a couple of years ago. The drains from the roof were aesthetically hidden from view by being placed internal to the brick columns in the church structure. Throughout the diocese there have been issues with such internal drains, and Our Lady of Angels experienced severe internal leaks in 2021 and 2023. The problem was alleviated by modification to the overflow openings (scuppers) in the drainage troughs along each side of the church roof. These vertical drains (10 in all) have been inspected via camera and issues have been cleared. This camera inspection also found that there are problems with two underground pipes which will be repaired when the weather permits.
Our staff had engaged diocesan approved roofers to inspect the roof and provide solutions. Our Harrison Design architects are also experienced in roof design and want to protect the interior of our church just as much as you parishioners. The architects are designing a roof replacement that not only drains water away of the church, but also addresses ventilation under the roof. This ventilation will address issues with mold or mildew, and increase the efficiency of heating and cooling the church interior.
The approach to the new roof is first to remove the current asphalt shingles, repair support boards as necessary, create a 10” support space with insulation and ventilation, and place new boards and roof on top. This elevated new roof goes from the ridge vent cap to the edge of the roof bypassing the current drain trough and internal drains. External downspouts will be added at the perimeter of the roof. This approach takes water down and away from the church. The two diagrams here are from the new roof specifications showing the elevated space for the new roof over the existing roofline. The roofing material could be copper, “rubber” shingles (composite slate shingles with the appearance of slate matching the chapel), or asphalt shingles. A fabricated copper molding will cover the new elevated roof from the side giving a coordinated perspective from the ground.
Bidding requests have been sent to Diocesan approved roofers for their review and proposals. The progress on this re-roof project will be noted in future bulletins.
One final request for your help: Due to other diocesan priorities, we are unable to conduct a formal major capital campaign at this time. This means our project urgently needs donations to ensure we can move forward with our plans. If you or your family can make a sacrificial donation or pledge now, please let me know. Las buenas noticias sobre la renovación del santuario continúan. Nuestros arquitectos de Harrison Design están trabajando en los esquemas preliminares del diseño y, de acuerdo con la encuesta realizada en nuestra parroquia, el diseño aborda las preocupaciones relativas a los confesionarios frontales, los altares votivos, el suelo y (sí) los baños. Esta futura renovación promete ser hermosa, pero debe protegerse con un techo que no tenga goteras. El techo de la iglesia fue una de las principales preocupaciones en la encuesta parroquial.
El diseño actual del techo nos sirvió bien desde 1985 hasta hace un par de años. Los desagües del techo estaban ocultos estéticamente, ya que se colocaron en el interior de las columnas de ladrillo de la estructura de la iglesia. En toda la diócesis ha habido problemas con este tipo de desagües internos, y Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles sufrió graves goteras en 2021 y 2023. El problema se palió modificando las aberturas de rebose de los canalones de drenaje a lo largo de cada lado del techo de la iglesia. Estos desagües verticales (10 en total) se han inspeccionado con una cámara y se han solucionado los problemas. Esta inspección con cámara también reveló que hay problemas con dos tuberías subterráneas, que se repararán con el buen tiempo.
En este momento estamos en contacto con empresas aprobados por la diócesis para inspeccionar el techo y proporcionar soluciones. Nuestros arquitectos de Harrison Design tienen experiencia en el diseño de techos y quieren proteger el interior de nuestra iglesia. Ellos están diseñando un reemplazo del techo que no solo drena el agua de la iglesia, sino que también aborda la ventilación debajo del techo. Así resolverá los problemas de moho y hongos, y aumentará la eficiencia de la calefacción y la refrigeración del interior de la iglesia.
El enfoque para el nuevo techo consiste primero en retirar las tejas de asfalto actuales, reparar las tablas de soporte según sea necesario, crear un espacio de soporte de 10 pulgadas con aislamiento y ventilación, y colocar nuevas tablas y techo encima. Este nuevo techo elevado va desde la tapa de ventilación de la cumbrera hasta el borde del techo, pasando por alto el canalón de drenaje actual y los desagües internos. Se añadirán bajantes externos en el perímetro del techo. Este enfoque lleva el agua hacia abajo y lejos de la iglesia. Los dos diagramas que se muestran aquí proceden de las especificaciones del nuevo techo y muestran el espacio elevado para el nuevo techo sobre la línea del techo existente. El material del techo podría ser cobre, tejas de «goma» (tejas parecidas a las que tiene la capilla de adoración) o tejas de asfalto. Una moldura de cobre fabricada cubrirá el nuevo techo elevado desde el lateral, dando una perspectiva coordinada desde el suelo.
Se han enviado solicitudes de licitación a los techadores aprobados por la Diócesis para su revisión y propuestas. El progreso de este proyecto de renovación del techo se indicará en futuros boletines.
Una última petición de ayuda: debido a otras prioridades diocesanas, no podemos llevar a cabo una campaña formal de recaudación de fondos en este momento.
